Upkeep and taxes
Towny collects once a day, at midday server time. Keep the town bank funded:
- A town or nation that cannot pay its upkeep is deleted.
- A resident who cannot pay the town's tax is removed from the town.
- A resident who cannot pay a plot's tax loses that plot.
New towns start with every tax at $0. A mayor can set a flat tax of up to $1,000, or a percentage of up to 25%. Mayors do not pay their own town's tax, and a nation's capital does not pay nation tax.
How much you can claim
A town can claim 8 town blocks for every resident, with no upper limit. A town block is one 16×16 chunk. A resident can own up to 100 plots.
Claims have to stay at least five town blocks away from another town. Outposts are allowed and are not limited by town size. Other towns cannot overclaim your land.
Joining a nation adds bonus town blocks to every town in it, based on how many residents the nation has:
| Nation residents | Bonus town blocks |
|---|---|
| Fewer than 10 | +10 |
| 10 | +20 |
| 20 | +40 |
| 30 | +60 |
| 40 | +100 |
| 60 or more | +140 |
What a town protects
In a new town, residents can build, break, use items and flip switches. Nation members, allies and outsiders cannot, until the mayor changes it. Fire spread, explosions and hostile mob spawns are off inside town land by default.
Standing in your town regenerates health. In the wilderness anyone can build and break, which is the reason to claim.
Town and nation titles
A town's title and its mayor's title change as it gains residents:
| Residents | Town | Mayor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Settlement | Hermit |
| 2 | Hamlet | Chief |
| 6 | Village | Baron Von |
| 10 | Town | Viscount |
| 14 | Large Town | Count Von |
| 20 | City | Earl |
| 24 | Large City | Duke |
| 28 | Metropolis | Lord |
| Nation residents | Nation | Leader |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 10 | Land of … | Leader |
| 10 | Federation of … | Count |
| 20 | Dominion of … | Duke |
| 30 | Kingdom of … | King |
| 40 | The … Empire | Emperor |
| 60 | The … Realm | God Emperor |
Plots and town ranks
A mayor can mark a plot as one of nine types: default, shop, arena, embassy, wilds, inn, jail, farm or bank. None of them costs extra.
Towns have five ranks to hand out (assistant, helper, donator, vip and sheriff) and nations have two (assistant and helper). If a mayor leaves, the town passes to an assistant.
Camps
A camp is a free, temporary claim for players who are not in a town yet. Fire and explosions are switched off inside it.
A camp goes cold after 24 hours and is removed after 48. Relighting it resets the clock.
Towny commands
The commands to found a town, claim land and add residents are on the commands page, and under Claiming in the in-game /guide.
